'Wave 2' 802.11ac Wi-Fi Incoming

The 802.11ac Wi-Fi standard has been driving the market on product rollouts, and college campuses at the cutting edge of technology are among the institutions most equipped to take the next step in data speeds.

The 11ac wireless standard has been available on the market for more than a year, but the second "wave" of products offers performance enhancements, such as scaling the potential speed of data rates from 1.3 Gbps to up to 3.47 Gbps. This second wave could be made available soon, according to Network World.

Despite some holdups in fully integrating the next wave of the 11ac standard, Network World reports that "it sounds as though enterprise Wave 2 802.11ac products will start spilling forth next year, with high-density applications expected to be the initial use for them."
